18 students visited our Stevens Croft site for a tour of the mills, followed by a presentation and a detailed discussion on a range of topics including; the UK timber supply chain, forest resilience and factors affecting the global timber trade that impact UK markets. Rob MacKenna, General Manager, said "It's great to have the opportunity to support the studies of forestry students by showing them the processes and technology we have on site and link this to national and international factors that influence our industry."
Mark Tomlinson, Senior Lecturer National School of Forestry, said "I would like to express my thanks on behalf of the University of Cumbria, National School of Forestry and all our 1st year undergraduates who came to Lockerbie yesterday. The insights you provided will be something that will stay with them, along with the sights and sounds of sawmill in operation. These visits help each student to not only understand the timber processing sector, but helps them formulate the ideas that will drive their future careers. From discussion held in the minibus on the return trip to Ambleside, I know that the students were inspired by what they had seen. These visits have an impact and allow the student to turn academic lecturers into real experience, furthering their development into the foresters, researchers, and innovators of the future."
