Students from Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) were welcomed to our Lockerbie site last Friday. The BSc (Honours) students are in their final year and taking degrees in Environmental Management or Wildlife Conservation Management. The module they are studying as part of this field trip is a final year elective called 'Practical Applications of Multi-Purpose Woodland Management'. It follows on from a core module in third year called "Multi-Purpose Woodland Management" that is designed to give all the SRUC environmental / conservation students some awareness of the diversity, management and value of woodlands/forest products in Scotland.
Professor Edward Wilson, Silviculturist, said "Thank you for once again providing an excellent tour of James Jones Lockerbie site. The visit was the perfect conclusion to an intensive week talking all aspects of woodland management.
"I was impressed how excited the students were to visit the sawmill. They demonstrated a clear understanding of the importance of the silviculture that brings timber of the right quality to market. They also engaged with the business elements and the sawmill production process. What always impresses me, from a teaching perspective, is the sharing of knowledge and the way you are able to draw out some really powerful discussions. Seeing is believing, and I think this visit will have an impact way beyond what we could achieve in the classroom.
"Thanks for taking them around and for addressing all the questions. I really appreciate all your team do for the next generation of forest sector professionals."
