More than 230 runners took to the streets and riverside paths of Dumfries for this year’s Doonhamer 10K, supported by James Jones & Sons’ Lockerbie site.
The Doonhamer 10K is the largest club-organised road race in Dumfriesshire and is organised by James Jones retiree Keith Ainslie. Starting and finishing in Dock Park, the scenic but challenging route takes runners alongside the River Nith, with plenty of encouragement along the way.
This year’s event had a fantastic atmosphere, with music from the town band, Braxton the bagpiper and even some extra encouragement from the event’s cow mascot.
Reflecting the event’s environmental ambitions, this year’s finisher medals were handmade from recycled paper and card and filled with wildflower seeds. Once runners have finished displaying their medals, they can plant them to grow wildflowers and provide a welcome source of food for bees and other pollinators.
James Jones General Manager Rob MacKenna also joined the event, helping to hand out medals and finisher trophies at the finish line.
There was plenty happening away from the racing too. The DH9 Foundation provided free CPR training, while Dumfries & Galloway Aviation Museum brought along a Canberra bomber cockpit, proving popular with visitors young and old.
Race Director Keith Ainslie said: “James Jones’ support has been invaluable in allowing us to improve and enhance the event this year and extend its appeal beyond the running club community.
“More than half of our entrants were not members of running clubs and, for many, it was the first time they had raced this distance. We’re looking forward to building on this year’s success to make the 2027 event even bigger and better.”
