Six candidates were selected to participate in last week’s ‘Timber Haulage Academy’ to gain valuable experience of the forestry industry.
Forestry and timber haulage is a rewarding career, however it requires a specialist skillset over and above ‘regular’ HGV work. Operationally this includes off road driving and hydraulic crane handling, whilst mentally the role requires a strong mindset and positive attitude. It can entail working in remote locations in challenging site and weather conditions.
This course aimed to provide a pathway into the forestry haulage sector and give candidates enough experience to –
- Decide if they would like to pursue a career in timber haulage
- Gather baseline experience as a starting point for applying for roles within the sector
- Become more employable to Timber Haulage businesses
The week was broken down into one classroom day, two lorry training days and two days visiting harvesting sites and the Mosstodloch sawmill. Participants also had the opportunity to see machines in operation and speak with operators.
The course was project managed by Creel Consulting Ltd.
