Students from the T Level Arboriculture and Forestry programme at East Durham College were given an insight into the future of timber processing during a visit to the new James Jones & Sons' sawmill development in County Durham.
The visit gave the students a unique opportunity to experience one of the UK's most significant timber industry investments in recent years. James Jones & Sons' new multi-million-pound sawmill is the first industrial-scale sawmill to be built in the UK for many years and represents a major step forward in modern timber processing, combining advanced automation, innovation and operational efficiency to meet the growing demand for sustainably sourced timber.
During the tour, students explored both the existing sawmill and the new facility, where they learned how timber progresses from forest to finished product. The visit also highlighted the important role that modern sawmilling plays within the forestry supply chain and demonstrated how investment in technology is shaping the future of the industry.
For many of the students, the scale of the operation came as a surprise. Having previously only seen smaller estate sawmills, they were impressed by the size and efficiency of the existing log yard, log grader and processing facilities. Their excitement continued as they stepped inside the new mill, where the scale of the development and level of automation left a lasting impression.
The visit forms part of East Durham College's commitment to providing students with meaningful industry experiences that complement classroom learning and prepare them for careers in arboriculture, forestry and the wider land-based sector.
Following the visit, the college expressed its thanks to the James Jones & Sons team for sharing their expertise and providing students with an inspiring glimpse into the future of the timber industry. The course tutor also praised the experience, noting its value in bringing the forestry supply chain to life and expressing interest in arranging future visits to continue inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.
