Lockerbie - Further Investment
James Jones & Sons have announced that a further 6 kilns have been purchased from kiln manufacturer, Mahild, for their Steven's Croft sawmill site at Lockerbie. This will take the total number of kilns to 16 with an on-site annual kilning capacity in excess of 160,000m3, one of the largest, single site kilning capacities in Europe. These kilns include a heat recovery system which has already proved successful in reducing energy consumption with the existing kilns in use at Lockerbie. The new kilns are expected to come on stream during October 2011 and reflect the increasing volumes processed through the new saw-line at Lockerbie 3.
The entire kilning complex at Lockerbie is now being heated from hot water provided by the neighbouring Eon biomass power plant. Hot water is conveyed via a pipeline installed during 2010. This innovative investment displaces an estimated 9,000 tonnes of carbon emissions emitted using conventional heat sources, and further enhances the company's sector leading environmental credentials.
