Co-products

Given the size and scale of our business, it may not surprise you to learn that James Jones & Sons’ sawmilling operation generates over 360,000 tonnes (or 14,000 lorry loads) of by-products – or as we prefer to call them ‘co-products’ – each year.

So, exactly how much sawn timber and co-products do we get from each saw-log and how are they used?

  • Sawn timber (55%) – construction carcassing, pallet and
packing case manufacture, fencing, railway and landscape sleepers
  • Wood chips (32%) – destined for use in particleboard manufacture
(MDF), pulp (paper production) and biomass (heat or power generation
using renewable resources)
  • Sawdust (10%) – particleboard manufacture, wood pellets and agriculture
  • Bark (3%) – horticultural/garden landscape products

The crucial point is that none of it is wasted. Which is why timber is such a unique, environmentally sound and sustainable resource.
